The Scottish capital draws visitors from far and wide the whole year round, and it certainly isn’t hard to understand why. There is so much to discover within the wall of Edinburgh, from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street’s iconic retail hub to the history and mystery attached to the fascinating Old Town. And that’s without mentioning the various parks, restaurants, theatres, bars and, of course, the world-renowned Edinburgh Castle itself.

However, there is one time of year when Edinburgh truly shines. The week between Christmas and New Year – also known as the ‘Crimbo Limbo’ – showcases the city at its very best. Whether you’re looking to celebrate the Christmas atmosphere or get in the party spirit for New Year’s Eve, there is plenty to discover. Make sure you don’t miss out on any of the excitement by reading our guide to the very best Crimbo Limbo events taking place in the Scottish capital this year!

Some of the city’s youngest residents have flexed their artistic muscles to create beautifully festive window displays for locals and tourists alike can admire. The aim of these windows is to spread Christmas cheer across the city, with an overarching theme of ‘A Festive Welcome’.

An Edinburgh Christmas Carol

When? Until 4th January 2020

Where? The Royal Lyceum Theatre

Keep the festive spirit alive with a trip to the Royal Lyceum Theatre to see Edinburgh’s very own take on Dickens’ classic.

The story goes that, whilst on a reading tour, Dickens visited Edinburgh and strolled through Canongate Kirkgate, coming across the tombstone of one Ebenezer Scroggie. The stone described Scroggie as a  “Meal Man”, or corn merchant, but Dickens misread the epitaph and thought it said “Mean Man” — thus, the iconic grump was born.

So it’s fitting that the Scottish capital has devised its own interpretation of Dickens’ classic ghost story. Adapted and Directed by Tony Cownie, this telling brings the festive tale back to the city of its origin, with a special guest appearance from another Edinburgh icon — Greyfriar’s Bobby!

Christmas Market

When? Until 4th January 2020

Where? East Princes Street Gardens

Even after the big day is over, Edinburgh’s Christmas markets will be continuing to sparkle throughout the festive season. There is no better way to keep the Christmas spirit alive than with a visit to the city’s famous festive stalls, offering a wide range of local and unique goods.

From one-of-a-kind gifts to tasty treats, there’s no shortage of things to discover among the stalls, and there’s plenty of time to soak it all up. The market is open every day between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Nestled in the heart of the city, the Christmas markets of Edinburgh really do offer something for everyone.
