5 Cool Winter Hobbies to try your hand at in 2017

There’s nothing like the wintry chill in the air to make you want to curl up nice and warm in your luxury apartment. Yet too much time spent idly watching TV or reading a book can be enough to drive you up the wall. If you are looking for a new hobby to try your hand at until the temperature starts to rise, here are a few of our favourites.

1) Preserve Making

Whether you are an expert or just a beginner, winter is a great time to make preserves that will keep your tastebuds tingling for the rest of the year. Your preserves can range from jams and chutneys and even pickled foods. Online there is a wealth of information offering top tips and guides that can get you preserving in no time. All you need to do is decide on the tasty foods you want waiting in the pantry and get boiling.

2) Crochet

Crocheting is a hobby that is extremely satisfying albeit a little difficult to pick up straight away. But once you have it cracked you can make cute, personalised and handmade gifts galore! Practise the technique with a crochet hook and wool and, if you’ve never crocheted before, an online tutorial or a book will help. This is a great hobby to start in the winter as you can spend the cold nights inside hooking away on a cosy knit that will be as functional as it is fun once you’ve finished!

3) Knitting

Knitting may seem similar to crocheting at first glance. However, anyone in the know will tell you that the two skills have several significant differences. Knitting uses two large needles to stitch the wool together. Following a pattern you can craft the wool into nearly any shape. Once you become accustomed to knitting and believe yourself to be a pro you can start with more intricate projects like jumpers and socks to warm you up this Christmas.

4) Whisky Tasting

This winter warmer is sure to heat you up on a cold day. Whiskey tasting is a fun way to get a group of friends together and enjoy one evening. All you need is a few types of whiskeys — which you easily buy from any supermarket. If you want to go all out, look online for some lesser-known brands!

This is a great hobby to enjoy cosied up in the comfort of your own apartment or even better when you go out and seek the help from the experts. Edinburgh Old Town and New Town are filled with whisky bars and friendly bar staff and punters who can give you a whisky 101 before you choose a dram from the gantry.  Just remember to drink responsibly.

5) Painting

Painting yourself a wonderful, picturesque winter scene within a warm home is another great hobby to start this winter. Whether you are an expert with a brush or an absolute novice, the enjoyment one can gain from developing this most aesthetically pleasing skill is like no other.

While the cool winds are blowing, and snow storms brew outside why not explore your own artistic talents with an easel, canvas and some paints. ,As hobbies go, this is a fantastic one to pick up during winter as you can capture all the seasonal character of the landscape just by looking out your window.
