There’s nothing more enjoyable than settling down for an evening in with a good film, some comfort food and a cosy blanket. Or is there?

How about watching that film under the stars on a big screen surrounded by the lush greenery and comforting smells of Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens? Thanks to the return of the Luna Open Air Cinema this September, that is exactly what you could be enjoying if you are one of the lucky few to get tickets.

Billed as “Classic films under the stars in the country’s most incredible settings”, the Luna Open Air Cinema tours the UK, selecting only the finest venues to set up its giant screen – from Kew Gardens to Bournemoth Pier, Warwick Castle to Ascot Racecourse. If you’ve never been to an outdoor viewing such as this before, you could be in for a treat.

The Venue

The Royal Botanical Garden of Edinburgh is surely one of the finest in the world, showcasing a rich collection of horticultural delights across 72 acres. Founded in the 17th century as a physic garden it has long been a centre for education and plant science. And for three nights this tranquil outdoor setting will welcome an audience to enjoy an eclectic mix of cinematic greats.

The films

There is something for everyone on show this September. Here’s what is in store:

Friday 2nd September

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (12A)

The newest and most recent films to join the Star Wars franchise. Directed by J.J. Abrams and based on the original characters created by George Lucas, this is a must for sci-fi and adventure fans.

Saturday 3rd September

Romeo and Juliet (12A)

The world’s most famous love story was given a unique cinematic twist by Baz Luhrmann back in 1996, and it’s signature quirk and comedic flair has stood the test of time. This touching film of love and loss is bound to be made all the more enchanting by the magical backdrop of the gardens. Whether it’s your first time seeing the film or your 21st, it’s unlikely that you will ever have seen the young Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes perform in an atmosphere quite like this.

Sunday 4th September

Jurassic Park (PG) Spielberg’s toothy cult classic is the perfect adventure film for the big screen and always guarantees fun for cinemagoers both young and old. With dinosaurs brought to life and on the rampage, you’ll almost feel the prehistoric beasts with you in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens.

The food and drink

Hot food and drink is available during the film, courtesy of the Luna Bar. Choose from a full range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks before sitting back and relaxing as the lights come down. If you get peckish during the film, why not try some of the Sicilian-inspired street food, including homemade pizzas and burgers.

Fancy a little bit extra?

If you want to make the night that little bit more special, there are plenty of little touches that can make your night all the more memorable. For £26 you can reserve your own premium seat, complete with director’s chair and prime seating in front of the screen. Premium members also get a free drink on arrival at the Luna VIP bar. Worried about the queue? No need, premium members also get priority access to the bar.

This year the Open Cinema is carrying out a bubble package, so you can help yourself to a chilled bottle of Prosecco and popcorn on the side as you enjoy your film of choice. Other optional extras include blankets and back rests to make sure your experience is as comfortable as possible.

Doors for all films open at 6.45pm and films start at 8.15pm. Entry fee is £13.50 per adult and £9 per child. Premium seats cost £26. To book in advance call 0844 858 6767.
