IntroductionSince the former Royal Infirmary was founded in 1740, it has attracted some of Scotland's pre- eminent architects including William Adam, Sidney Mitchell and David Bryce. Today, Foster & Partners' masterplan for the re-developed site ensures that the finest of these buildings are restored to their former glory and enhanced by sensitively integrating them with contemporary architecture. Grant Brooker, a senior partner at Masterplanners Foster & Partners, says: Residential buildings are placed to the greener edges of the site with the busier commercial and retail activities concentrated in the centre. Quartermile's seven acres of green space are three times the area of St Andrew Square. They increase the quarter's soft landscaping from eight to 34%, rolling the Meadows back into the city.
