Masterplan

Since the former Royal Infirmary was founded in 1740, it has attracted some of Scotland's pre- eminent architects including William Adam, Sidney Mitchell and David Bryce. Today, Foster & Partners' masterplan for the re-developed site ensures that the finest of these buildings are restored to their former glory and enhanced by sensitively integrating them with contemporary architecture.

Grant Brooker, a senior partner at Masterplanners Foster and Partners, says: "Our aim is to open up the whole site so that it becomes a part of the city again."

Residential buildings are placed to the greener edges of the site with the busier commercial and retail activities concentrated in the centre. The masterplan provides:

  • over 900 apartments in new and period buildings
  • over 30,000 sq m of new office accommodation
  • over 10,000 sq m of retail and leisure space
  • 7 acres of open landscaping

Quartermile's seven acres of green space are three times the area of St Andrew Square.

They increase the quarter's soft landscaping from eight to 34%, rolling the Meadows back into the city.
